A new day

The power was too great, he couldn't control it.  The energy that was pouring forth from his body, he couldn't tell if it was his anymore, there was just too much of it.  He could feel his skin starting to burn, and then peel from the flow.  If this power continued flowing out of him at this rate, he could kiss his body goodbye.

Perhaps it wasn't such a good idea to try and steal the holy relic from the largest church in the land. He laughed under his breath.  It was easy getting past the guards, disguises and a little bit of knowledge about the religion went a long way, and the traps were a piece of cake.  When the priests mark the traps so that they don't accidentally trigger them, it makes it a lot easier.  But to think that the item itself would kill him, that was a blow that he couldn't bear.

His skin was almost completely off his body now, and he could feel a burning sensation in his muscles.  Maybe it was better this way, at least now they wouldn't know who had infiltrated their holy grounds.  It was at this time, right before he felt the energy start to rush past his bones, that he heard a voice.  Come to me, you are needed.  I will give you peace, and a purpose.  The infiltrator turned around and saw the ghostly image of a man in white robes.  It was getting harder to think now, but the white man seemed like a good person.

He took a step towards the image, however he didn't notice the pressure plate with the giant x on it, and fell straight down into a giant pit, along with hundreds of skeletons.  He looked down at himself to make sure he was ok, and realized that he had become a skeleton as well.  And that was the last sentient thought that he ever had.

"And that, my children, is why this family no longer goes treasure hunting anymore, despite the generations of treasure hunters in our family line.  It stops here.  My father inadvertently abandoned me.  I won't do the same to you."

The storyteller bent down and kissed his son and daughter on the forehead.  "Now go and get some good rest, you have a long day ahead of you helping Mommy with the farm."

"Daddy!  Why do you have to leave us?"  one of the kids asked through tear-filled eyes.

"I just have to go into town to find some buyers of our goods, that's all, now don't worry and get to sleep." He tussled their hair before he gave a last smile and shut the door behind him.  He looked at his wife who was right outside.  "I'll be back by the end of the day.  If I'm not, send out the search party."

She nodded, tears coming down her face.

With that, he held her close for a minute, then gave her a kiss goodbye, put on his cloak, and stepped out onto the front porch.  He pulled a golden bar out from his pocket, clicked it on, and looked at the picture that was displayed in front of him.

This relic was such a curse and it was the entire reason his family became treasure hunters.  He sighed.  He needed that treasure, his family couldn't afford to live just off of the farm, for he knew nothing of farming.  He looked at the picture one more time, waved his hands, and when he finished the chant that went along with it, he disappeared from the front porch of the farm house.

(alright, another day, another story.  Nothing too new going on over here.  Hopefully you guys have voted on the poll, I'm excited to see the results, so if you haven't yet, please vote!  It'll help me out quite a bit.  Also, again, feel free to leave any comments, or try writing a story of your own, as you can see, the stories don't have to be that good in order to get started, or just try something new, it doesn't have to be story writing.  Hope you guys are doing awesomely!  Laterz )
