Shorty number two/dos/ni/swei... yay! Intercultural title!

Things didn't end up like we had planned.  Of course, nothing ever goes to plan, but no one, even in their worst dreams, would have been able to see this coming.

It all started with the new biodome.  Same thing as before.  We'd lock up fifteen to twenty people, all with different occupations which were useful in a survival type scenario, in a self contained environment, full of everything necessary to survive, and see what would happen in anywhere from twenty to thirty years.  The information gained from this research could boost the natural lifestyle agenda leaps and bounds beyond their competitors.  Of course, because of the doubts in people's minds, we had to throw away the key to the lock, essentially we would be locking ourselves in with no way out until the experiment was done, but it was worth it for the science.

Of course, those were our thoughts before the war.

It didn't take long for communications with the outside world to become shoddy at best, and within a year of being locked up inside, we received no transmissions from those outside.  We would sometimes see planes fly overhead, or hear large booms coming from different directions, and Charlie thought he saw a mushroom cloud once.  I guess it didn't take long for the war to escalate to an apocalyptic scale.

Soon the planes stopped flying overhead and for years nothing seemed to change, besides the seasons.  The trees outside would change colors, as usual, going from green, to yellow, to brown, then regrowing its leaves, but during the spring of the sixth year, the trees didn't grow back their leaves.  There was also a smoky, yellow haze that had started appearing, it only grew thicker as time went on.

We had no idea what was going on.  We threw speculations around between our usual chores around the dome, but we were likely never going to find out what was happening.

During the summer of the eighth year in, we finally saw movement outside the dome, Billy actually called us all over to watch, since he was the first one to see it.  What we saw horrified us, for what came through the haze, while furry, was nothing like any of the animals we'd seen before.  It's head was long and angular; it's neck was elongated and curved; it's body was lean and had a bone structure that struck those of us who saw it as unnatural.  It quickly darted back into the smokiness, and we all resumed our chores, somewhat let down from our high hopes of seeing other life.

Year ten was the worst.  The haze went away, but the sun never came out, all that ever happened, was rain.  It never stopped raining.  It rained so much that by the end of the month, the water had surrounded the base of the dome; by the end of the year, it had reached a point where it went over our heads.  The next year it finally reached the top of the dome, and we have no clue how deep it is, or even if it's still raining.

By this point in time, there were actually a few more mouths to feed, and some of them were actually old enough to help out with the chores.  We were starting to feel a little claustrophobic, and we needed to expand.  We didn't have much choice, so we started digging down.  It's a funny thing, water, even when it's above ground, it still soaks the ground beneath it, and just like digging a hole at the beach, our project quickly became water-logged.

Our food sources were becoming scarcely enough for us to survive.  Some of the original inhabitants of the dome finally snapped, and stole food from the store rooms, despite our delicately planned food plan.  Chaos eventually won over, and now I'm the only one left; leaving this history of what happened here in hopes of someone finding us, so that they can know what happened here.  May our research prove useful to you.

(This one came out quite a bit differently than I had intended, also quite a bit darker, and I'm not as happy with this one as I am my previous shorty, but it's not too horrible.  I think.  It's also a different style, more scientific/journally than my previous writings.  Meh, not a great execution, but hopefully a decent idea, if anyone wants to try redoing this, feel free :) )
